Course Description
Social neuroscience combines approaches from cognitive neuroscience and social psychology and highlights a multilevel approach to emotional, social, and cognitive phenomena, making it one of the newer, more promising fields of cognitive neuroscience.
There is no question about it; experience supported by peer reviewed research confirms this: The additional consideration of evoked potentials in the diagnostic process as a complementary component leads to precise diagnostics and thus to a neurobiologically based, personalized treatment.
Further, a comprehensive report is enhanced with an analysis of the patient’s self-assessment that extends beyond the clinical interview and includes an analysis of the self-report which is transcribed into areas of the brain that might be relatively deficient.
HBImed, in cooperation with the Brain and Trauma Foundation Grisons, has developed an evaluation system that allows complex processes to be handled easily and depicted in a report.
The recording of the EEG within a framework of neurological-psychiatric diagnostics as well as the recording of evoked potentials has been standardized. Once the data has been collected, and compared with a FDA approved database, the clinician is ready to analyze the information to develop an assessment and subsequent comprehensive treatment plan. This data can now be analyzed in a mostly automated way and presented in a Word document. This is simple and requires no specific skills. It is the art of interpretation of the data and ultimately the combination of the individual elements which create a holistic process and description of a person’s brain functioning.
Methodological limitations and theoretical implications for the understanding of social cognition as contextual, multilevel, and situated phenomena are discussed.
Objectives:
- Be able to describe and understand the raw EEG
- Describe the steps of linking the raw data to neurologically significant information
- Be able to analyze the data terms of amplitude and frequencies
- Be able to analyze the data in terms of evoked potentials
- Demonstrate the required steps to submit data to the HBImed server
- Discuss how to interpret the data with regard to deviations from the HBImed database
- Discuss the various meaningful indices, which have been scientifically processed (Arousal Index, Central Sensory Index, Theta/Beta – Ratio, ADHD Index, Emotional Regulation Index, etc.), as a component of the neurobiological processes.
- Design medication recommendations on the basis of neuromarkers
- Identify ADHD subtypes on the basis of neuromarkers
- Design treatment plans on the basis of the results obtained

Pre-Requisites
Prior to the course, attendees will receive raw EEG/ERP data and access to the HBImed Report Generator to utilize during the course. It will not be necessary to collect your own data for the course. In order to allow all attendees to learn using the same data, we will limit the course discussions to the data that is provided.
All registrants will be given access to the HBImed database for the duration of the course and for three months following the course.
To utilize the HBImed database, you will need the ability to collect EEG and ERP data. All attendees will be eligible to receive loaner equipment to allow them to record EEG and ERPs for two months following the course.

Dr. Mitchell Sadar is a licensed psychologist who has been practicing clinical psychology for over 25 years. He has worked in a wide array of settings including adult and adolescent inpatient units, substance abuse rehabilitation programs, prisons, and private practice. In 1999, Dr. Sadar became the first clinician in the greater Philadelphia area to be trained in EEG biofeedback/neurofeeback and one of the first 500 neurofeedback practitioners in the world. H

Dr. Meckley-Kutyana
Dr. Meckley-Kutyana specializes in applied psychophysiology and neuroscience techniques to assess and train all aspects of human physiology, helping individuals optimize their functioning. Utilizing 19 years of experience and training in EEG analysis, multiple biofeedback modalities, neuromodulation, relaxation techniques, and entrainment, she combines these evidence-based approaches to help individuals achieve their health and performance goals.
Andrea holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialty in Psychophysiology and a Master’s degree in Health Psychology. She is licensed by the NC Psychology Board as a Licensed Psychological Associate and Health Service Provider.
She is board certified in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback through the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, certified in EEG-Based Imaging through the Society for the Advancement of Brain Analysis, certified as a Quantitative EEG Technologist through the Quantitative Electroencephalography Certification Board, and a certified Interactive Metronome provider. Andrea is a member of the Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback and the International Society for Neurofeedback & Research. She has served as an instructor for EEG Spectrum International and for EEG Education and Research and provides mentoring to other Neurofeedback professionals. She has also published several book chapters and articles and presents at scientific meetings.
Andreas is an expert in the study of the human brain. For the past 17 years he has been the CEO of the Bündner Brain and Trauma Foundation has been exploring the links between biology and mental disorders – for example in ADHD. Previously the head of the School Psychology Service Graubünden together with the world-famous Russian neurophysiologist Yuri Kropotov, in 2003 he initiated his first research project: recordings of brainwaves of 250 healthy children and adolescents to create a database. As early as 2004, the database was expanded by 540 adults. Together with people from Norway and Russia, the people of Grisons formed the basis of an index database on the human brain. Müller has been CEO of the Brain and Trauma Foundation in Grisons since 2006.
Comparatively new to Müller’s research is that mental illness can be objectively detected by quantitative comparisons of measurements with the so-called EEG. Müller likes to make use of a comparison from another area of medicine: “Psychiatry is today at the point where surgery in the invention of the X-ray apparatus was more than 100 years ago.” Muller and his colleagues have studied the biological causes of Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with particular interest. According to Müller, this research focus has come from everyday practice as a child and adolescent psychologist. “Our research must benefit patients exclusively.” ADHD visible in black on white, Muller has since lectured internationally on this topic in South Korea, United States, Israel, Brazil and more. For the method, among other things, the patients have to analyze images on the PC for 22 minutes and click on the correct sequence with a computer mouse. “Persons affected by ADHD are very hard-eyed anyway,” says Müller. Because the brain waves were measured during the test, the researchers could also objectively detect the disorder – black and white. The method enables a virtually unequivocal diagnosis of ADHD, says Müller. “Thanks to the measurements, we also know what we need to do in therapy.” In addition to detailed instructions for the procedure in non-drug therapies, he mentions the great advantages of prescribing drugs such as Ritalin. “In conventional diagnoses, around two-thirds of patients respond to the medication. The method provides virtually 100% responder quality. This same method has been expanded to understanding chronic pain, anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, and more.
